Society Membership: Grades, Fees & Benefits
ASHRAE membership is open to any person associated with heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or refrigeration, sustainability, smart buildings, and energy flexibility. ASHRAE is unique because its membership is drawn from a wide range of disciplines relating to the HVAC&R field. The Society has four grades of membership that are awarded to applicants based on their experience and participation in the industry.
A brief description of the grades is shown below:-
Full Member Grade is open to anyone who has a combination of education, professional licensure and work experience equivalent to twelve years in the HVAC&R industry. You will be asked to provide information regarding your education, work, and professional licensure when applying for Full Member Grade.
Dues: $240 annually (£190)
Qualifications: The equivalent of 12 Society-approved years of experience composed of an approved combination of:
- Completed education beyond high school;
- Work experience (including research, teaching, design, construction, sales, engineering sales, or engineering management); and Professional engineering or related registration or license issued by a legally authorized body.
Benefits:
- One complimentary Winter or Annual Conference registration for new members to use within their first 24 months of membership.
- Subscription to the monthly ASHRAE Journal and quarterly High Performing Buildings (HPB) magazine.
- Choice of one annual benefit: ASHRAE Handbook Online, Handbook PDF (edition based on the current Society Year), one eLearning Course, one ASHRAE Standard (PDF), or one Certification Study Guide (PDF).
- New members receive complimentary access to the ASHRAE Handbook Online which provides access to all four Handbook volumes. Renewing members may select the Handbook Online as their Annual Membership Benefit or purchase a subscription at a discounted rate.
- Member access to the Technology Portal, and Science and Technology for the Built Environment.
- Member pricing for publications, courses, standards, and conference registrations.
- Can hold office and vote at Chapter, Regional and Society level.
Associate Grade membership is for those who have been in the industry for a few years and are focused on developing skills, and growing their network. Associate grade membership is open to anyone who has an interest in matters of design, operation, or maintenance in HVAC&R-related fields.
Dues: $240 annually (£190)
Qualifications:
- Work experience (including research, teaching, design, construction, sales, engineering sales, or engineering management)
- Interest in the advancement of the Society’s aims, and sufficient qualifications to cooperate with HVAC&R engineers in the advancement of the knowledge relating to HVAC&R engineering and its application.
Benefits:
- One complimentary Winter or Annual Conference registration for new members to use within their first 24 months of membership.
- Subscription to the monthly ASHRAE Journal and quarterly High Performing Buildings (HPB) magazine.

Affiliate Grade is a low cost, introductory membership for those who are either: (1) under 30 years of age OR (2) who have been honorably discharged from the Military within the past 5 years.
Dues: $60 (1st Year – £48) | $90 (2nd Year – £70) | $120 (3rd Year – £95)
Qualifications:
- Interest in the advancement of the Society’s aims, and sufficient qualifications to cooperate with HVAC&R engineers in the advancement of the knowledge relating to HVAC&R engineering and its application.
- For new members only.
- Must be either: (1) under 30 years of age OR (2) honorably discharged from the Military within the past 5 years
- Can only hold this grade for up to 3 cumulative years.

- Subscription to the monthly ASHRAE Journal and quarterly High Performing Buildings (HPB) magazine.
- Member access to the Technology Portal, and Science and Technology for the Built Environment.
- Member pricing for publications, courses, standards, and conference registrations.
Student Grade membership is designed for engineering students who may be considering a career in HVAC&R. Student members are given the opportunity to transfer to Associate grade membership after graduation using the SmartStart program.
Dues: $25 annually (£20)
Qualifications:
- Must be studying or have an interest in an HVAC&R industry-related field.
- Matriculated in an approved course of study in the arts and sciences covered by the Society’s objectives.

What is the SmartStart Program?
Simply put, it’s the best way for ASHRAE student members to receive the many benefits of Associate grade membership after finishing college. SmartStart is a 3-year program that allows Student members to transfer to Associate grade membership at a rate that is recent-graduate friendly.
*Please note that the SmartStart program is only for current ASHRAE Student members who have been a Student member for at least one year.
